Boost Throughput, Increase Efficiency, and Reduce Errors with Conveyor Accessories and Ancillary Equipment

A truly automated conveyor system often needs one or several pieces of ancillary conveyor equipment to maximize system throughput and efficiency.

These pieces of equipment often provide the largest ROIs by eliminating labor costs for mundane tasks like carton erection, weight checking, label application, case sealing or taping, stretch wrapping, document insertion, void filling, case strapping, and more.

Our conveyor experts will work with you to explore turnkey or custom accessories and equipment by considering the specifics of your operation, including:

  • Type, material, size, shape, and weight of items being processed
  • Product transport speeds and desired throughput rates
  • Environmental compatibility and application needs (cold, hot, wet, or dirty, food safety, wash-down requirements)
  • Challenging product characteristics (slippery, hot, or oily parts)
  • Overall system design, including available conveyance surface and existing processes
  • Integration with other automation systems and equipment

The Benefits of Conveyor Accessories and Ancillary Equipment

There are many types of conveyor accessories available, each with its own unique features and benefits. Some of the most valuable benefits include:

The benefits of label printing and application automation

  • Streamline processing and reduce errors with adjustable speed and spacing for scanning, printing, and application
  • Reduce reliance on expensive and difficult-to-source labor by eliminating the manual removal and labeling of products
  • Accommodate various containers and labels. Handle different types, sizes, shapes, and application locations. Use for case labeling, bin or carton IDs, barcodes, shipping labels, peel away packing slips, and pallet labels
  • Precisely print high-quality labels with automated pre-printed decorative label applicators

The benefits of in-line conveyor scales

  • Reduce processing times and system efficiency for labeling and sorting processes by switching from manual labor to automation
  • Ensure outbound order accuracy with precision software and hardware systems that can automatically check, weigh, classify, and transport items
  • Reduce waste and the accompanying costs by catching and rejecting under or over-filled packages (with fewer false rejects)
  • Gain greater inventory and product flow insights by integrating with warehouse software systems to collect data for reporting and analysis
  • Integrate with almost any production line with modular, customizable designs including those for handling sensitive, food-safe, or washable goods
  • Accommodate a wide range of items including bags, bottles, cartons, cans, canisters, blister packs, cases, over wraps, pails, trays, tubes, flexible pouches, vacuum packs, or unwrapped products
  • Enhance productivity, accuracy, and system integrity with a robust selection of options like color displays, feedback controls, product monitoring capabilities, and various rejecting/sorting devices

The benefits of robotic document inserters

  • Maintain order accuracy consistency with precise and repeatable placement of materials along with multiple automated verification checks
  • Decrease handling errors with seamless integration to other end of line packaging equipment, such as conveyors, carton erectors, case sealers, and case packing robots
  • Handle many types of materials including invoices, return slips, picking or packing lists, promotional brochures, and instructional booklets
  • Guard against downtime due to toner, ink, or paper refills, and container waste removal with proactive monitoring and built-in printer redundancy
  • Save on printing costs and reduce waste with low first page print times

Types of Conveyor Accessories

We offer various conveyor accessories and ancillary equipment to accommodate the specifics of your items, product flows, and other needs. These include:

Print and apply label systems

In-line printing and applicating machines integrate with conveyors to automatically, quickly, and accurately create and attach unique identification or shipping labels to incoming and outgoing containers of all shapes and sizes. This ensures each box, tote, or container is accurately identified, labeled, and directed towards its intended destination.

Here’s how print and apply label applicators work:

  • Scanners along the conveyor record information about each item and send it to the printer/labeler so it knows what to print and when to print it
  • Once the item (box, tote, carton, etc.) reaches the automatic label printer and applicator, it’s precisely aligned and spaced to allow the printer/labeler machine to consistently print and place a label on it
  • After the label is applied, the container moves on to the next process

In-line weight control systems

Also called “conveyor scales,” “in-line conveyor scales” or “in-line weigh scales,” these systems use digital weight scales at various points along a conveyor to automatically check, weigh, classify, and transport products while identifying and flagging items with potential errors such as those that are under or overweight.

Here’s how in-line weight scales work:

  • Items transported on a conveyor system move on to the weight scale (which is usually placed between 2 conveyors)
  • The scale automatically scans the item’s ID, records its weight, and reports the weight to the system software
  • The system software compares the reported weight to the expected weight
  • The system then routes the item to the next appropriate process (i.e. correctly-weighted items move to shipping, incorrectly-weighted items move to quality control to be inspected and corrected)

Robotic document inserters

Robotic document inserters use a combination of commercial printers and industrial robots to place paperwork inside of items (boxes, totes, cartons, etc.) on a conveyor line. Robotic inserters can handle many types of paperwork, including invoices, return slips, packing slips, pamphlets, booklets, and even product samples, and can do so at high speeds (up to 25 cartons packed per minute).

Here’s how robotic document inserters work:

  • A carton enters a cell containing the robotic inserter
  • The inserter scans the carton to verify its identity
  • The system identifies the required paperwork and sends it to a line-side printer
  • Once printed, the system scans the paperwork to verify it matches the needs of the carton
  • The robotic inserter takes the paperwork and places it in the carton
  • The system performs a final verification scan to ensure accuracy by rejecting and reprinting any mismatches

Conveyor Accessory Applications

Specific industries and applications that can benefit from implementing additional conveyor accessories and ancillary equipment include:

  • Manufacturing
  • Warehousing
  • Omnichannel distribution centers
  • 3PLs
  • E-commerce
  • Food & beverage

Frequently Asked Questions About Conveyor Accessories

Do you have questions about conveyor accessories and ancillary equipment? We have answers.

I handle lots of different types of products in my operation. Are there conveyor accessories that will accommodate each of them?

No two manufacturing, warehousing, distributing – or any other operations – are exactly alike. Fortunately, conveyor accessories don’t have to be one-size-fits-all either. We’ll consider your operation holistically to select the right conveyor accessories that fit your processes and items handled.

What types of conveyor accessories and ancillary equipment do you offer?

Some of the most popular conveyor accessories include label printers and applicators, document inserters, and automatic scales. That said, we take a brand-agnostic approach to conveyor accessories, which means we can work with any brand or manufacturer to source whichever conveyor accessories are needed for your application.

Why Choose Conger for Your Conveyor Accessory Needs?

With over 65 years in the material handling industry, we have the experience and expertise to design and implement conveyor accessories, regardless of your facility, operations, and products handled.

Our experts will find the right combination of ancillary equipment to improve your efficiency and productivity while minimizing costs.
