FIRE PROOFING PRODUCTIVITY

CHALLENGE

Essity, a global leader in sustainable hygiene and health solutions, recently encountered a significant safety issue with their Toyota polycab forklifts.

Poly Forklift - Edit

These forklifts were prone to fires due to debris buildup within the engine compartment, leading to severe damage and operational risks.

Determined to find a solution, Essity reached out to Conger for help.

Debris-Induced Fires

Essity has multiple operations that produce paper dust and scraps, which have the potential to accumulate in the engine compartment and create this dangerous situation.

Over time, heat generated by the forklift’s engine and transmission increases the risk of ignition, posing a threat to both the equipment and operator safety.

This issue demanded an innovative solution to effectively mitigate fire risk.

SOLUTION

A Fire Suppression System

After evaluating the problem, Conger recommended the installation of a fire suppression system designed by Rotarex, a global leader in gas safety solutions.

This system is engineered to detect and extinguish fires in their early stages, minimizing damage and preventing potential disasters.

Forklift Fire Suppression System - Edit

How the Fire Suppression System Works

Imagine a forklift’s engine bay accumulating flammable debris during daily operations. If a fire ignites, the Rotarex fire suppression system quickly springs into action. Here’s how it works:

  1. Trigger Line Detection
A plastic trigger line, pressurized with compressed air, is routed through the engine and transmission compartments. This line is designed to detect extreme heat. In the event of a fire, the heat melts the plastic, causing the release of the compressed air inside.
  2. System Activation
When the compressed air escapes, it triggers a valve on the suppression container mounted atop the forklift. The valve’s activation releases the fire suppressant liquid stored in the container.
  3. Suppressant Dispersal
The suppressant is distributed through a network of tubes and nozzles strategically positioned in the engine bay. These nozzles target the fire directly, extinguishing it rapidly and effectively.

Manual Override for Added Safety

In addition to automatic activation, operators have the ability to manually activate the system. A red button, conveniently located within the operator’s reach, serves as an emergency override. If a fire is detected before the trigger line is activated, the operator can press this button to release the suppressant immediately. This dual-layered approach enhances safety and control in critical situations.

IMPLEMENTATION

Manual Override for Added Safety

In addition to automatic activation, operators have the ability to manually activate the system.

A red button, conveniently located within the operator’s reach, was added and serves as an emergency override.

If a fire is detected before the trigger line is activated, the operator can press this button to release the suppressant immediately. This dual-layered approach enhances safety and control in critical situations.

Post-Discharge Maintenance

Once the fire suppression system is triggered, it requires a reset by an authorized service dealer.

The recharging process involves refilling the suppressant container and replacing the trigger line to ensure the system is fully functional and ready for future protection. While this step is essential, it is a small price to pay for the safety and security it provides.

RESULTS

A Shift In Safety

By implementing the Rotarex fire suppression system, Essity has significantly reduced the risk of fire-related damage.

This solution not only protects their equipment but also ensures the safety of their operators and surrounding environments.

This project highlights the importance of proactive safety measures in industrial settings.

It demonstrates that even straightforward engineering solutions can prevent disasters, safeguard assets, and, most importantly, save lives.
