Description

Welcome to a new era of mobile elevating work platform (MEWP) operator training. This boom lift certification and scissor lift certification safety training class is designed to help prepare your operators for OSHA & ANSI compliance within the different classes of aerial lifts. You’ll dive deep into what it takes to keep yourself and pedestrians around you safe while learning new mobile elevating work platform skills you can immediately apply to your job. Each class involves classroom curriculum and a hands-on training evaluation that is tailored to the exact types of boom lifts, scissor lifts, and man lifts you operate.

This class is perfect for beginners who have never operated an aerial work platform piece of equipment, as well as experienced operators who need to be re-certified. It features videos, quizzes, interactive content, and a final exam to verify knowledge. You can access the course anytime and anywhere – via mobile phone, tablet, or computer. Our in-person class offers all of the same as our online classes.

After successful formal instruction is completed, a hands-on familiarization training session will be scheduled to successfully complete the course to become a qualified operator.

What Your Operators Will Learn:

This training is designed to be general in nature since it covers safe operating procedures for all types and brands of Mobile Elevating Work Platforms. It is expected that operators will follow established familiarization procedures prior to operating models not specifically addressed during this training.

Upon completion of this course you should be able to:

  • Identify the different types of mobile elevating work platforms
  • Describe the responsibilities of all parties involved in the operation of MEWPs
  • Identify safe operating procedures for all types of MEWPs

Class Outline:

I. Terminology & Applications of MEWPs

  • Distinguish between the six categories of MEWPs: 1A, 1B (or trailer-mounted booms), 2A, 2B, 3A and 3B
  • List the distinguishing characteristics of each type

II. Responsibilities of Parties Associated with MEWPs

  • List the regulatory bodies for Mobile Elevating Work Platforms in North America
  • Define responsibilities in the operation of aerial equipment per role-manufacturer, dealer, owner, user and operator

III. Identify & Avoiding Safety Hazards

  • Understand the information found on Genie and other MEWP product safety decals and explain the use of symbols, color-coding and signal words
  • Describe the specific potential hazards associated with operating MEWPs from these categories: tip-over, fall, collision and electrocution
  • Understand where to find information on avoiding additional hazards

IV. Safe Machine Operation

  • Identify and understand the five principles of safe operation
  • Give an example of how control systems can vary greatly from one MEWP to another
  • Explain the fundamentals of Mobile Elevating Work Platform operation

V. Hands-On Training

  • Demonstrate proficiency in operating a MEWP
  • Explain the steps required to become familiarized with a model of MEWP prior to use

After successful class completion your operators will receive:

☑ Certificate of completion
☑ Wallet card

Training Requirements Quick Review

ANSI & OSHA requires every MEWP operator to receive proper training and evaluation prior to operating a mobile elevating work platform. This course helps satisfy the operator training requirements under ANSI and OSHA’s regulations. Specifically, it is designed to help learners advance their knowledge in responsibility, safety, and operation in a safe way to protect themselves and their coworkers from the potential hazards associated with their use.

There are 6 classifications of MEWPs and training is required for each classification.

Your Questions. Answered.

Q: How long is the online classroom course?
A: The time for an operator to complete the online classroom course can take anywhere from 2-3 hours.

Q: How long is the hands-on training?
A: It depends on how many people are needing to be evaluated. Plan on roughly 10-15 minutes per operator per equipment type. We recommend having about six people or less per hands-on training “session” to keep class participants focused.

Q: My facility has no Genie equipment, will this course still be ok for other brands of mobile elevating work platforms?
A: This training is designed to be general in nature since it covers safe operating procedures for all types of Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWPs). It is expected that operators will follow established familiarization procedures prior to operating models not specifically addressed during this training. Because this training is general in nature, a good comparison is driver’s education class. You went through the class to familiarize yourself with the rules of the road, laws, etc. not to get your license for a specific brand of car.

Q: Is the course accessible through mobile phone?
A: Yes, you can access the course via mobile phone or tablet, as well as via laptop or desktop computer.

Q: What if I have to interrupt my course, can I resume where I left off?
A: Yes, you may leave the course and resume at any time and also resume where you left off. It is recommended you set aside enough time to finish the course at one time.

Q: I purchased the course, now what?
A: We will follow up via email to provide you access codes and instructions for entry into the online course.

Q: What happens after I successfully complete the course?
A: You will receive instructions in the initial course access email on how to schedule a time to complete the hands-on training.

Q: What do I need to bring for the hands-on evaluation?
A: You will need to print off and hand the trainer your “proof of completion” for online MEWP operator training. This document is automatically generated upon passing the online course and needs to be shown to the trainer prior to starting the hands-on evaluation. You WILL NOT receive your hands-on evaluation if no proof of completion is shown to the trainer.
